The Rafting Route on Ganges
» Rudraprayag to Rishikesh : It is a popular and strenuous run at the same time and the entire stretch extends up to 150 km from Rudraprayag to Rishikesh. Rudraprayag is located at the confluence of Alakananda and Mandakini rivers, which are tributaries of Ganges. From Rudraprayag, it takes about 4 hours to reach Srinagar. The water stretches in between are calm as well as turbulent as you'll find a series of rapids on the way as well. The Srinagar to Devprayag stretch is really rough and it is here that the Bhagiraathi and Alakananda meet to form Ganges. There are long stretches of flat water in between thrashing rapids on the route. The ride from Devprayag to Kaudiyala is very calm which takes about four hours to complete. The river stretch from Kaudiyala to Shivpuri and that gopes up to Rishikesh is a very demanding stretch that will test you no end. Though a deep feeling of satisfaction runs through your mind once you complete this run. This entire expedition takes 4 to 5 days depending upon the pace with which you move.

» Tehri to Shivpuri : This stretch starts at Tehri and goes through various rapids of grade III and IV before reaching Devprayag. The Bhagirathi river merges with Alakananda at Devprayag after which the river runs becomes calm and manageable till it reaches Kaudiyala. Afterwards up to Shivpuri it again becomes demanding with grade IV rapids testing your river rafting skills to its very limits.

» Kaudiyala to Shivpuri : It takes about 5-6 hours of rafting to reach Shivpuri from Kaudiyala. You will see the wooded hills, riverside temples and two of the best rapids called “the wall” and the “golf course” in between. After this tough run, you get a stretch which is very tranquil and calm. There are several camping sites located on this stretch.


River Rafting Tips
You must be mentally and physically fit, and prepared for whitewater rafting. You should not be hydrophobic. Carry dry bags and boxes to carry your personal belongings. Keep all your basic and necessary medications with you. If you are a complete novice in river rafting, you must undergo some basic training.
