Experience Bikaner
The history of Bikaner goes back to 1488 when a Rathore Prince, Rao Bikaji founded his kingdom here after he was provoked by an insensitive remark by his father. He was the second son of the illustrious founder of Jodhpur, Rao Jodhaji. Rao Bikaji focussed on the barren wild area of Jangladesh which he transformed into an extraordinary city. This principality was turned into a princely state by the foresight of Maharaja Ganga Singh who saw to it that Bikaner developed into a modern city. The location of Bikaner on the medieval trade route worked to its advantage and the place soon became a prime trade centre. The city is set on a slightly raised ground and is surrounded by a seven km long wall that turns it into a castle. Bikaner is also called the Camel Country for it is the home to the largest camel research and breeding farm in the world.
